Reading Reflection No. 2
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme or argument of this book is that there are two mindsets that people have: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. The growth mindset drives success in people because of the constant need and willingness to improve in the face of failure. The fixed mindset is a mindset where people usually shy away from challenges because it makes them uncomfortable. Because of this, personal growth is hindered in any activity that they do for fear of being judged by their peers. Anyone can change their mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset if they are aware of it happening.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
The book really connects and enhances what I am learning in ENT3003 because professor Pryor really teaches us to be confident in anything that we do. He encourages us to look in our immediate surroundings and look for opportunities to start a business, and this is a skill that is learned by the growth mindset. Pryor teaches that any skill can be learned if you were to put the time in it, and this is exactly what the growth mindset is. The growth mindset says that if there is enough commitment put into a skill, then the skill would be developed, guaranteed. So for the purpose of taking this class, Pryor attempts to teach entrepreneurship in his students, and I think that he is applying the growth mindset to his students.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
The exercise would involve spending an hour each day on a skill that they really want to learn for about three months to see how good they become at that skill at the end of the three months. For example, stepping is a fun and interesting skill that can be learned just through practice and observing others. The exercise would involve learning the entire routine of a step performance and many others. I am certain that if this were accomplished in three months, the person would actually be really good at the skill.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
What I learned that differed most from my expectations would be that children are usually accidentally taught a fixed mindset when they are praised for doing something really well. This makes the child shy away from things that he does not do well in, and this differed from my expectations because I did not think something that is said so nonchalantly could have such a large impact on a child.

Hi Duc,
ReplyDeleteGreat job in explaining the book about growth mindsets. I found it very intriguing to know how much someone can learn just by reflecting on the topics learned to class and apply it to the readings assigned to the class. It helps understand more about personal experience in connection with understanding the dynamics of being an entrepreneur. Moreover, I liked how you included that most kids have a fixed mindset because they are taught these skills. Learning development begins as the child develop speech and much more. It is so important to open your mind up to anything because it might just change society. Thanks for sharing,
Kaitlin
Duc,
ReplyDeleteI read the same book and thought it was also interesting about the mindsets. I agree with you about how the growth mindset really connects with this class. I believe that I have grown more and confidence while taking this class and have grown my growth mindset which I think is important to have in the entrepreneur world. Great post.
Duc,
ReplyDeleteI think that if someone had a fixed mindset and they spent an hour a day doing something productive working toward a goal, they would find great results at the end of a three month period. Even if this is something that they initially were uncomfortable with, seeing the positive results would encourage the person to be more willing to step out of their comfort zone. That is a great concept for an assignment or personal project.
Hi Duc,
ReplyDeleteGood job on this reading assignment. I agree with you in that professor Pryor also teaches us skills that are a part of the growth mindset. I also find it interesting and surprising that praise results in a fixed mindset and I wonder what the ideal balance of praise would be for a child because praising a child could allow them to build up confidence which is important for the growth mindset, but according to your reading doing it too much actually results in a fixed mindset.
This is a good summary of the book. I like how you compared the book with professor's lessons. I also like the idea that you proposed about the exercise that you would do with a class. It was interesting to read about how praise affects a child's development as well, I will carry this lesson with me in the future with my children. Great job.
ReplyDeleteHi duck,

I really enjoyed this post and I’m thinking about reading the book myself.
Great work Duc,
ReplyDeleteYou provide us with a very in depth synopsis of the book as well as your reflection of it. Your reflection was creative and original. You did a great job of connecting what the author wrote with what our professor has been talking about as well.
